Each spring the Historical Society of the New York Courts awards three scholarship prizes\u00a0to SUNY community college students, based on original writing and research in the form of an essay. Each year, contestants write on a specific topic, this year’s topic being: YOU, the VOTER: \u00a0HOW FAR HAVE WE COME? \u00a0IS THE JOURNEY OVER?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The top prize is $1,500 with runner up prizes of $1,000 and $500.<\/p>\n In 2008, Hudson Valley student Elijah Fagan-Solis wrote a winning essay<\/strong> entitled The Courts and Human Rights in New York: The Legacy of the Lemmon Slave Case. <\/em>In 2015, another student Melanie Hecker earned Honorable Mention<\/strong> recognition for her essay, entitled LGBT: The Road to Equality — How Have the New York Courts Addressed Equal Human Rights for the LGBT Community<\/em>?<\/p>\n How can a student achieve this level of distinction?
