About 33 percent of them are facing the threat of homelessness or housing instability and approximately 12 percent of them also could experience hunger. Homelessness and hunger are products of poverty.

There has been significant growth in poverty among students living in New York in recent years. Of those who are between the ages 18 and 64, which includes the community college population, about 14.3 percent (or 1.7 million residents) live below the poverty line in New York.

Some of our Hudson Valley Community College students often struggle with poverty and have to make difficult choices that can impact their academics. Simultaneously, there are faculty and staff who may not understand these student challenges.

The Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA) offers a poverty simulation workshop that allows faculty and staff to experience and understand the challenges faced by those struggling with poverty. As part of this three-hour simulation, participants will assume the roles of family members living in poverty while interacting with other participants, who serve in roles as service providers and community agencies.

When:
Wednesday, March 22 from 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
with lunch to follow for the participants
Deadline to register: Thursday, March 16
Where:
Sharp Hall — Educational Opportunity Center (EOC)
431 River St., Troy
Facilitator: Capital Area School Development (CASDA), in conjunction with EOC’s staff development day

This simulation can be applied to one of the three CET certificates for three credits:

Certificate Credit: Teaching & Learning
Category: Classroom Management

Certificate Credit: Leadership Development
Category: Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Effectiveness

Certificate Credit: Academic Advising
Category: Advising Special Groups

Space is limited for this simulation.
