Putting Ourselves in a Struggling Student\u2019s Position: Poverty Simulation<\/strong><\/p>\n A recent report from Community College Equity Assessment Lab in San Diego presented discouraging statistics and observations about today\u2019s community college students. About 33 percent of them are facing the threat of homelessness or housing instability and approximately 12 percent of them also could experience hunger. Homelessness and hunger are products of poverty.<\/p>\n There has been significant growth in poverty among students living in New York in recent years. Of those who are between the ages 18 and 64, which includes the community college population, about 14.3 percent (or 1.7 million residents) live below the poverty line in New York.<\/p>\n Some of our Hudson Valley Community College students often struggle with poverty and have to make difficult choices that can impact their academics. Simultaneously, there are faculty and staff who may not understand these student challenges.<\/p>\n The Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA) offers a poverty simulation workshop that allows faculty and staff to experience and understand the challenges faced by those struggling with poverty. As part of this three-hour simulation, participants will assume the roles of family members living in poverty while interacting with other participants, who serve in roles as service providers and community agencies.<\/p>\n When<\/strong>: This simulation can be applied to one of the three CET certificates for three credits:<\/p>\n Certificate Credit:<\/strong> Teaching & Learning Certificate Credit:<\/strong> Leadership Development Certificate Credit:<\/strong> Academic Advising
