More than 90 middle school and high school students, and their parents, \u00a0were on campus Saturday, April 29 for the inaugural Albany Promise and Hudson Valley Community College Guarantee Community Project, a day filled with educational information and resource sharing.<\/p>\n
Representative from local education groups and community based-organizations, along with Hudson Valley professional staff members, facilitated a series of workshops geared toward 7th and 8th graders; 9th and 10th grade, and 11th and 12th grade.<\/p>\n
According to Louis Coplin, director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and Student Life, program planning began in\u00a0December for the April event that involved, Alfredo Balarin, assistant director for Student Life; and Mark Bobb Semple and Amy Svirsky of Albany Promise. Albany Promise is \u00a0a regional, cross-sector partnership where community leaders in Albany, come together to support a shared “cradle-to-career” education vision.\u00a0“We\u00a0wanted to create a community outreach project\u00a0that supported the mission of Albany Promise, all\u00a0the\u00a0educational and\u00a0community based programs\u00a0 under their umbrella,\u00a0and Hudson Valley Community College,” according to Coplin.<\/p>\n
Community representatives from the following\u00a0organizations participated: Albany Housing Authority, Albany High School, Albany Boys and Girls\u00a0Club, Black Child Development Institute, Capital District YMCA, Leadership Charter Schools for Girls, Liberty Partnership Program, Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar, 15 Love,\u00a0University\u00a0at Albany STEP Program, and SUNY Systems Chancellor’s Office.<\/p>\n
Hudson Valley representatives included Gayle Healy, Center for Careers and Transfer; Richard Bennett, Continuing Education; Justin Hoyt, Athletics Department; Jessica Pugiliese, Admissions Office; Heather Henry, Financial Aid Office, and Larry Ellis, Counseling and Wellness Center.<\/p>\n
