Curriculum Committee Set Agenda

 

The last 2010-2011 meeting of the Curriculum Committee is Monday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in BTC Meeting Room 3. The final meeting of each semester is reserved for consideration of proposals the committee was not able to address at previous meetings and to address other committee business, including election of officers, review of forms and process, curricular policy/issues.

1.0 Roll call by signatures

2.0 Approval of minutes of March 14, 2011

3.0 New Business

3.1 Change in credit hours, prerequisites and course description for POLS 200 Internship in Government – Submitted by Robert Whitaker

Additions and changes to the course which includes adding POLS 100 Introduction to Political Science as an eligible pre-requisite, adding a variable credit hour depending upon the number of hours per week a student performs on-site field work and changing the course description to more accurately reflect the course.

3.2 Deactivation of the Computer Software Application Specialist Certificate Program – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty

3.3 Deactivation of he Health Information Technician Certificate Program – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty

Low enrollment in these curricula along with suggestion from its respective advisory board has driven the decision by the faculty to seek deactivation.

3.4 Discontinuance of the Computer Information Systems: E-Commerce A.A.S. degree program – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty

Continuation of the process to remove this program from the roster of Hudson Valley and State Ed offering permanently.

3.5 Change in course title and catalog description for CMPT 101 Personal Computer Concepts/ Application I – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty

3.6 Change in course title and catalog description for CMPT 105 Personal Computer Concepts/Applications II – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty

Computing is no longer restricted to personal computers as it takes place on may devices. This is the purpose of the title and course description changes for these two courses.

3.7 Introduction of New course CISS 272 Advanced Networking Topics – Submitted by James Looby and Computing and Information Sciences Faculty.

This course will serve as an additional elective option for CIS: System and Network Administration A.A.S. degree program students.

3.8 New course THEA 170 Introduction to Improvisational Theatre – Submitted by Dorothy Reynolds and Joshua Sperber

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of improvisational acting. Some of the advantages that this new course will offer will be aiding students in the alleviation of the anxiety and self-censorship that can inhibit the playfulness and freedom that constitute spontaneous thought. It will also allow students to develop the listening and observation skills that are necessary for effective interpersonal communication in work, school, and social situations.

3.9 Change in contact hours to ARTS 268 Professional Portfolio Practice – Submitted by Dorothy Reynolds and Kyra Garrigue

Many of the digital media courses already require the students to complete a portfolio of their semester-s projects.Therefore, this course should be reduced to one contact hour that would focus on editing the student-s existing portfolios instead of building them from the start.

3.10 Deactivation of Course: Writing In the Human Services (ENGL 112) – Submitted by Maria Palmara, Ph. D.

3.11 Deactivation of Course: Practical Communication (ENGL 122) – Submitted by Maria Palmara, Ph.D.

Both of these courses are being deactivated due to the fact that they have not been offered for over ten semesters. They no longer meet the needs of students at HVCC.

3.12 New Course: Creative Writing: Stage and Screen (ENGL 153) – Submitted by Maria Palmara, Ph.D.,Joshua Sperber Ph. D. and Douglas MacLeod, D.A.

This new course will familiarize students with the writing skills necessary for both playwriting and screen writing.

3.13 Title Change and Course/Catalogue Description Change: College Grammar (ENGL 116) – Submitted by Maria Palmara, Ph.D. and Professor Anne Dearing

The new and more interesting title and description will better represent the course content.
